The Department of Computer Science and Information Systems at Birkbeck is one of the long-established computing departments in the UK, having celebrated our 50th anniversary in 2007. We provide a stimulating teaching and research environment for both part-time and full-time students.

George Magoulas was a keynote speaker at the 13th IEEE International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies, July 15-18, 2013, Beijing, China. His talk entitled "Intelligent Constructionist Environments for Learning and Teaching" presented interdisciplinary research in intelligent interactive learning environments that was conducted during the past few years at the London Knowledge Lab.
Andrea Cali has been invited to speak at the 5th International Workshop on Semantic Web Information Management (SWIM 2013) New York, USA and the 2nd International Workshop on Data Management in the Social Semantic Web (DMSSW 2013) Aalborg, Denmark.
Prof Michael Zakharyaschev will give a short course "Ontology-based data access" at the 9th Reasoning Web Summer School(RW 2013) in Mannheim, Germany, July 30 - August 2, 2013.
Alex Poulovassilis gave a keynote talk on Flexible querying of heterogeneous graph data at the 18th International Conference on Applications of Natural Language to Information Systems, describing recent research at the London Knowledge Lab on supporting flexible query processing and search over Linked Open Data.
