Module outline

The work-related Project requires students to source, plan, design and build an original and significant piece of software for a real-world customer that satisfies a clear business need. Students are also required to provide comprehensive documentation of all aspects of their work (e.g. project planning, analysis, design, implementation, testing, project management, etc.).

The project must address a business need and involve a customer. The customer can be an employer, a small business, a charity, a school, or any other small-scale organization. The actual artefact produced for the customer might be a web application, database, desktop application, financial spreadsheet, or any other piece of practical software.

The project should bring together all the different strands of learning students have undertaken on their degree. It serves as a bridge between the academic context of study and the practical, professional world of work in the computing, IT and web-related sectors.

Aims

- To provide the opportunity to demonstrate the practical application of academic learning in a work context.

- To develop technical and work specific skills relevant to the IT industry

- To develop a range of ‘soft skills’ essential for successful project management.

- To prepare students to work effectively in the IT industry, or a related area, on completion of their Foundation Degree.

On successful completion of this module a student will be expected to be able to:

  1. Apply underlying concepts and principles from academic learning in a workplace context.
  2. Select technology appropriate for the solution of a specific problem or business requirement.
  3. Plan and manage a small IT project.

Intellectual

  1. Determine relevant skills to apply to a particular task
  2. Identify and plan additional learning required for successful completion of a specific project
  3. Reflect critically on their learning and evaluate its relevance and limitations.

Practical

  1. Utilize a range of IT tools and techniques to meet a business need.
  2. Present information effectively and appropriately to a group of peers and tutors/workplace supervisors.
  3. Produce a portfolio of work to a professional standard.
