BSc Information Systems and Management, MSc Advanced Information Systems

The learning environment was great

I always wanted to do a degree when I was in Sierra Leone. Unfortunately, this was not possible because I had to work. I have always been interested in computers and Information Technology and thought a degree will help boost my career prospect. It was only when I came to London I was able to pursue my dream. In 1999, I applied for a BSc Information Systems and Management degree at Birkbeck. At the end of the degree, I secured my first job in IT working for an international organisation. As a result I went on to do the MSc in Advanced Information Systems at the School of Computer Science and Information Systems which although extremely hard work and very taxing was a challenge and I was really proud of myself when I completed it successfully. As a result of getting the qualifications from Birkbeck I was able to get a job at CAFOD in the Applications Team within the IT department. The good thing about Birkbeck is that it gives you the flexibility of juggling full time work, studying part-time and at the same time spending time with your family. The learning environment was great. The lecturers and students were friendly and very helpful. I can not praise Birkbeck too highly.
