PhD Computer Science and Information Systems
Birkbeck is a great place for research
In 2004 I commenced my PhD study in computer vision at Birkbeck, a great college with almost 200 years history in the University of London. My supervisors were Professor Steve Maybank and Dr Xuelong Li. With Steve's great supervision and Xuelong's strong support, I learnt an enormous amount in two years!
Birkbeck is a great place for research: I worked on my own research topics, my supervisors gave me expert guidance and I collaborated with other researchers, including Professor Xindong Wu (UVM) and Professor Christos Faloutsos (CMU).
I achieved a lot in two years, including research publications in well known journals such as IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence. I was also chosen to be a guest editor for the journal Neurocomputing and Pattern Recognition. Last but not the least, I married with a fantastic girl, Jing, who encouraged me, helped me, understood me, and supported me so much over the year. After graduating, I received many job offers from different universities around the world. I chose to be an assistant professor at Hong Kong Polytechnic University.
I would like to thank Steve, Xuelong and Birkbeck for offering me such a great opportunity, for educating me in mathematics, statistics, computer vision, and machine learning, for directing me in my research topics, and for helping me to develop as an academic.
