Welcome to the teaching page for the 2014/15 instances of the

Strategic Information Systems
Strategic Information Systems Planning modules

(COIY031H6
BUCI023H7)

This page was created as the moodle modules for 2014/15 were not created till late August. The schedule for the module will be served from this page and not from the moodle calendar as in 2014. Most learning resources and coursework dropboxes for the module will be served from the SIS and the SISP Bloomsbury Learning Environment (BLE)moodle modules.

The module and your Programme

The SIS course is the keystone of the BSc in Information Systems and Management, building on both the Management and Information Systems skills that the students have developed in the Programme. Students on other programmes, taking the unit as an option, must commit to the mode of study and the requirement to do a group presentation in the same way as students on the BSc IS&M programme. The SISP course shares the same lecture and seminar series but the assessment activities are different. Following study of either of the units students will be able to contribute to IS Planning and Strategy formulation in corporate enterprises and complex administrations. They will have a deep understanding of a Socio-Technical approach to the deployment and use for competitive advantage of Information Technology and Information Systems in modern organisations. They will have an understanding of frameworks for analysing strategic issues of IS deployment and a familiarity with the most cogent current issues. They will develop confidence in addressing an audience and skills of explanation and persuasion. Students on the Masters programs will develop skills in collaborative research.

The Module Overview

The Undergraduate Module uses a process of research paper based seminars to explore the subject. The lecturer will introduce the subject matter and some of the topics in the first four weeks and students will have the chance to meet and make arrangements with students with whom they will be presenting. The Undergraduate student groups will present current papers from the SIS research literature. Postgraduate students will do library research round a Strategic Information Systems topic and present their findings as a group.

Assessment

Undergraduates will take an in-class Mock Exam during Week 6. This will be marked and returned with the marking frames to demonstrate to students how Examination responses are marked in this subject. This test constitutes 25% of the marks for the subject. Postgradute Students will submit an individual report for these marks. For all students 15% of the marks accrue from the presentation. 60% of the marks accrue from the Examinations.

Learning Materials

As far as possible current paper in the Colleges library holding will be used to teach the subject. For this reason the reading list may look rather long and heavy. However, this is to ensure that students are exposed to the most up-to-date thinking and research on the topics of the subject and to avoid the necessity of purchasing a text.
