About me

I received a BSc in Computer Science from Auckland University New Zealand and obtained a PhD in Computer Science from Birkbeck College, University of London. After completing my PhD, I joined the Computer Science Department at University College London  and subsequently returned to Birkbeck College as Professor of Computer Science. I was Head of Department for a substantial period and have previously been Institute of Coding lead at Birkbeck.  I am now emeritus professor in the department.

Research Profile

My main research interests are focused on Data Science, and in particular:

  • Applied Machine Learning,
  • Search Engine Technology,
  • Computational Social Science and
  • Human Dynamics.

I have written books on Relational Databases and Search Engine Technology, and an introduction to Applied Data Science and Machine Learning will be published in 2024. For my latest list of publications see dblp and Google Scholar.
