Some Tips & Techniques
- Title tag is one of the most important SEO factor. Although, title itself can be constrained, depending on different search engine. For example Google truncates 63 to 67 characters and will truncate at the end of the word. Prominence and relevance of the title is as important as the length of the title.
- Meta tags are used by most search engines to determine the main topics of a web page. There are different meta tags that could be used, like keywords, description, ODP (Open Directory Project)
- As a rule of thumb, have at least 200 words in each page. Very small pages tend to receive low value from search engines, as lot of spammers use small pages to inflate their sites.
- Alt and title tags are used where relevant and not stuffed with keywords but rather describe the image correctly and briefly.
- Having keywords in bold and italics can help. Use it where it is more appropriate without loosing the readability of the document.
- Try to make anchor tag as keyword rich as possible. Try to avoid linking to the same page two or more times.
- Cross linking to other good websites, which are already listed on top, allows search engines like Google, Bing, Yahoo to rank your page better.
Do's and Dont's
- Do not repeat keywords more frequently than it is necessary, else this could be flagged as stuffing or spamming.
- Do not use meta description for all the pages in your website. This could be very problematic, in fact it's better to leave this tag in other pages instead.
- Use meta robots to your specification, especially if you do not want search crawler to index and follow the links on the page.
- Browse the content of your website to make sure that there is no duplicate content.
- Try using variation of anchor tags or site might be flagged for over-optimization.
- Try to update the webpages as frequently as possible.
