
Alexandra Poulovassilis
Emeritus Professor of Computer Science
Alexandra Poulovassilis has an MSc and PhD in Computer Science from Birkbeck and a BA in Maths from Cambridge. She worked for IBM Greece and held posts at UCL and King's College London before coming to Birkbeck in 1999. She was Founding Director of the Birkbeck Knowledge Lab (Feb 2016-March 2021) and before that Co-Director of the London Knowledge Lab (2003-2015), Deputy Dean for Research Enhancement in the School of Business, Economics & Informatics (2015-21) and before that Assistant Dean for Research (2009-15), Founding Head of the Graduate Research School (2003-5) and former Head of Computer Science & Information Systems (2003-6, 2009-10). Her reseach interests are in data management, querying, analysis, integration, visualisation and personalisation. As well as conducting fundamental research in computer science, much of her work involves forging interdisciplinary links across the sciences, social sciences and arts. She is passionate about achieving gender equality in STEM career development.
