About me

I received a BSc in Computer Science from Auckland University New Zealand and obtained a PhD in Computer Science from Birkbeck College, University of London. After completing my PhD, I joined the Computer Science Department at University College London  and subsequently returned to Birkbeck College as Professor of Computer Science. I am currently the Institute of Coding lead at Birkbeck and have been Head of Department for a substantial period.

Research Profile

My main research interests are focused on Data Science, and in particular:

  • Applied Machine Learning,
  • Search Engine Technology,
  • Computational Social Science and
  • Human Dynamics.

I have written books on Relational Databases and Search Engine Technology and am currently working on an introduction to Data Science. An ongoing project I am involved in is, Samtla - Search And Mining Tools for Labelling Archives, whose aim is to develop powerful semantic labelling tools. For my latest list of publications see dblp and Google Scholar, and for a local list see my online publications. A list of recent research students can be found here.
